"Gary Gruber is the leading expert on the SAT" - The Houston Chronicle

Biography

Dr. Gruber is recognized nationally as the leading expert on standardized tests and originator and developer of the critical thinking skills necessary for use on standardized tests. It is said that no one in the nation is better at assessing the thinking patterns of “how” a person answers questions and providing the mechanism to improve the faulty thinking approaches. His SAT score improvements with students have been documented to be the highest in the nation.

Dr. Gruber’s unique methods have been used by Public Television (PBS), Sylvan Learning Centers, Grolier’s Encyclopedia, and are being used by school districts throughout the country, in homes and workplaces across the nation, and by a host of other entities. Most recently he has trained the University of California ’s teachers to create programs for specific critical thinking and problem solving skills for the minority programs.

Dr. Gruber (doctorate in Physics) has published more than 30 books with major publishers on test-taking and critical thinking methods, with over 7 million copies sold. (At one point, three of his books were listed among the 30 top selling trade paperback books in the nation).

He has also authored over 1000 articles on his work, in both scholarly journals as well as in newspapers syndicated nationally, has appeared on numerous television and radio shows and has been interviewed in hundreds of magazines and newspapers. He has developed major programs for school districts and for city and state educational agencies for improving and restructuring curriculum, increasing learning ability and test scores, increasing motivation and developing a “passion” for learning and problem solving and decreasing student drop out rate.  His results have been lauded throughout the country from all walks of life. It is said that  “his personal presentations spreads ‘contagious enthusiasm’ like an epidemic with his audiences.”

His mission and goal is to get the nation’s potential realized and the nation “impassioned” with learning and problem solving so that they don’t merely try to get a “fast” uncritical answer, but actually enjoy and look forward to solving the problem and learning. With this approach, Dr. Gruber believes that we’d have a nation of critical thinkers and in addition to quickly arriving at the correct answers and results, the process would actually be enjoyable. His quest started in fifth grade when he received a 90IQ (below normal) on an IQ test and was then determined to find out what made up intelligence. He subsequently developed powerful thinking strategies which are now used by millions. Because of Gruber’s tenacity, enjoyment and creativeness in solving problems, and using the strategies he has developed and honed for years, the Washington Post has recently called him “the super genius.”

Dr. Gruber’s work is consistently featured on numerous national television programs including Good Morning America , The Today Show, NBC Nightly News and in newspapers and magazines throughout the country. His award-winning computer SAT program, Score Builder for the SAT, previously published by The Learning Company, captured the market share of all SAT software programs and was rated #1 by Family PC Magazine and as the only program with “no weaknesses.” One of his earlier SAT books, Gruber’s Inside Strategies for the SAT was rated by The Washington Post as the best commercial SAT book and “the only book that would help a test-taker.” His current SAT book, Gruber’s Complete SAT Guide published by Sourcebooks(formerly published by Harper Collins as Gruber’s Complete Preparation for the SAT)  is now in its 11th edition. Gruber’s SAT books are used in more schools than any other SAT books [for example The New York City Board of Education purchased 20,000 of his SAT book per year (since 1985)] and its use is not limited only to the SAT. Other entities have also purchased his works to increase SAT scores and thinking skills. For example, Compaq had purchased 300,000 copies of Dr. Gruber’s CD-Rom  software. Dr. Gruber also writes syndicated newspaper articles regularly on the SAT, Test Taking, Creativity, and Intelligence, (syndication by The Los Angeles Times Syndicate, The New York Times Syndicate, Universal Press Syndicate, and Gannett News Service).  His new articles include “The Pros and Cons to the SAT” a  new 16 Question “SAT Critical Thinking Test,” a new 12 question “Genius Test” and a series on “How to Get Your Kids to Think.”  He is often also interviewed and quoted in the media. Dr. Gruber’s international endorsements are impeccable.

Gruber and his colleagues personally work with students to improve test scores and thinking skills throughout the nation. One of the unique approaches is that Dr. Gruber analyzes the student’s faulty thinking patterns before working with the student to get a grip on exactly what should be done to improve thinking skills and test scores. For example, 2 million students take the PSAT in October of each year and in January of the following year they retrieve their PSAT tests and answers. Dr. Gruber analyzes the test (wrong and right answers) so that the student can be taught the exact strategies needed to vastly improve thinking skills and markedly increase a score on the upcoming SAT.
